Search and Rescue
Search and rescue of Fynbos can be a serious business for our most vulnerable species. Our nursery offers rescue, rehabilitation and storage of plants that are likely to be lost through development within natural areas.

Why is saving Renosterveld important and necessary?

All around us, our few remaining open areas are under pressure as the demand for housing and the accompanying infrastructure increases. These areas often host the last remaining pockets of natural vegetation within our unquestionably threatened Fynbos plant community.
As little as 5% of the original areas remain intact in some Fynbos communities such as our rare Renosterveld on Granite or Shale.
So many of the species grown here at our nursery have been close to extinction and we feel it so necessary to be able to slow down that process.
Wetlands are a particular focus of Bristle Nursery because it is important that the few remaining wetlands, which play such an important role in the ecosystem, are preserved and managed sustainably. To this end, many of the plant species in the nursery are rescued and propagated with the aim of repopulating these sensitive areas.
Once the news of the nursery’s successes became known, requests for help to remove Fynbos plants for safekeeping at our nursery came from all over the Fynbos region. Plants that we would later return to their original home, or another similar approved site.
Our crack team of plant rescuers are now on call, to help out at a moment’s notice, to search out and rescue any threatened plants in the Fynbos community.

Please do not remove any plant or seed from natural areas.
These plants form part our protected natural environment and may thus only be harvested and collected with the necessary permits from the authorities. Discover Renosterveld have all legal and necessary permits for working on these unique projects.
